Information area

A discipline wiki is a kind of wiki that utilizes wiki-style content management to organize academic knowledge within a certain subject area or discipline.

Ideal characteristics and features of a discipline wiki

An academic discipline wiki needs to be managed and moderated, and cannot be openly editable by everyone in the world. It should be editable only by known (and not anonymous) authors who study the subject area of the wiki, who have profiles in the wiki, and who are recognized for their contributions to the wiki.

A wiki for an academic discipline can serve as a starting point for research, providing a bird's eye view of the entire field and what is going on in it. For any discipline such a view would need to provide information on the influential people, important publications, and the central concepts and classifications of the discipline.

For an emerging discipline, it is crucial to identify previously existing knowledge areas that relate to the discipline in order to build on these connections for further research. This process of identifying connections is beneficial to all science.

An ideal discipline wiki would be up-to-date with the latest developments and possibly include a section for the latest news.
